Rejoicing in Love

“The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17 NKJV

I’m not sure I understood this verse or what it really meant to “sing over” someone until we had our beautiful baby girl, Lily Faith. I am not a singer or musician by any means, but singing quietly over Lily comes so naturally when I am trying to comfort, soothe, or rock her back to sleep. Perhaps this is why there are whole albums and playlists devoted to songs and lullabies for babies.

There are also times when I am holding or watching her, that joy and gratitude swell up within me, and I truly and simply “rejoice over her with gladness”. There are times she just wants to be held and feel her mother’s touch, and I understand what it means to “quiet her with my love”. There are times when I am enjoying her and being silly, making up songs or jingles about her, and I learn what it looks like to “rejoice over her with singing”.

The Bible says though we are evil and sinful, we know how to give good gifts to our children, therefore how much more will our perfect Heavenly Father give good gifts to His children when we ask. He certainly loves us with a perfect, complete, and unfailing love that cannot even be closely matched in human terms. Rest in His embrace today and let Him quiet you with His love. Find the deep peace and security that comes from knowing He rejoices over you with gladness and singing. You are His beloved child, and He is a good and faithful Father.

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” 1 John 3:1
