Come up to the Lord
From the time Lily was just a few weeks old, there would be moments where she was fussy and after we had tried everything to soothe her, Austin would say “Let me see her. I’m going to put her up on my shoulder.” He would hold her up on his tall shoulder and walk around the house with her. Every single time this would calm her down as she quietly looked around at everything, enjoying the new perspective from up high (Some of you might know my husband is taller than the average man lol, 6′ 8″ to be exact). She had a different response when she was on dad’s shoulder than when she was on mine, and our best guess was that she just liked being up there almost 7 feet off the ground.
Isn’t it like this with us and our Heavenly Father too? There are times that I need to get up in His arms, and look at my circumstances from His higher perspective, seeing things from a spiritual point of view. It’s easy to get bogged down in this physical realm with all of its chaos and distractions, but we are called to fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal (2 Corinthians 4:18).
In Exodus 24:1 the Lord said to Moses, “Come up to the Lord”, and Moses went up the mountain where the glory of the Lord rested. He stayed there in God’s presence 40 days and 40 nights (Exodus 24:15-18). The Lord gave him detailed instructions on building the tabernacle, including how they would afford it. Then in Exodus 25:40 he says, “Build after the pattern that was shown to you on the mountain.”
I can picture the Lord like a loving Father saying “Come up here to Me. Be refreshed with My heavenly perspective. Come up here and stay a while and be renewed in My presence.” Sometimes we need to “ascend the hill of the Lord” like David mentions in Psalm 24, and then go about our life, building according to what God has shown us on the mountain.
“I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; From where shall my help come?
My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”
Psalms 121:1-2
